Universal Design

Universal Design

Universal design is an idea whose day has come. Universal design homes are accessible (barrier-free), but are also much more than that. They are beautiful, functional, and comfortable for all people – from the very young to the elderly, from the hale and hearty to those with physical limitations (vision, hearing, arthritis . . . ) or mobility limitations. Looking beyond the requirements for barrier-free design, a predominately disability-focused movement, universal design brings openness, light, and ease to the environment. Products for universal design, such as pull-down shelving and “designer” grab bars, allow daily tasks to be accomplished with greater independence and ease without sacrificing the home’s call for the aesthetic. The term universal design was coined by Architect Ron Mace who defined it as “the concept of designing all products and the built environment to be aesthetic and usable to the greatest extent possible by everyone, regardless of their age, ability, or status in...

Rose Marie M. Your quality of work and provider/client communication is of the very highest grade. It was a pleasure doing business with you. Thank you for your considerations and for understanding my needs. < Mildred M. “My only comment would be ‘You’re the best!’ I’ve lived a long time and have worked with lots of building and repair men, but you’re the top.” Bob W. “Pat Barnett is the consummate professional. He came prepared to inspect the proposed job (ladder, tape measure), pointed out potential problem spots, and offered advice on what should be done. He provided a detailed bid within 24 hours, and followed up with phone calls and emails. The workers arrived on schedule, were diligent, careful, and respectful of the property (cleaned up daily, etc.). He communicated clearly, and while the job took a little longer than expected, part of that was due to the weather. But Pat kept in touch, and we never felt under-informed. Oh, yes. The quality of the work is excellent. I give PJB Contracting my highest recommendation.” Greg P “We’ve actually used PJB on multiple projects, ranging from full bathroom renovations to tearing off an old 45′ X 15′ porch and building a spectacular new porch in its place. Both bathrooms were total guts. PJB also installed new doors and trim throughout the living room, refinished a 25′ long hallway (new everything including light fixtures) and a shorter hallway that we wanted widened and remodeled. All of their work is top tier. . . .Pat and his crew are excellent craftsmen who will do the job right. They keep the work site clean and and friendly and professional. Not only do we highly recommend them, we continue to use them for our ongoing remodel of our house.” Independence. That’s what I lost when my left leg was amputated. My wheelchair would not even fit through the bathroom door. Ageless Spaces, Pat and Ginger Barnett, with crew, listened to the changes needed to put me back in charge of my life. They had a plan, but they involved me in the personal, safety, and aesthetic needs. The shower, toilet, sink, mirror, and sliding doors added up to a pleasant room and the independence I needed. Ageless Spaces has my deepest gratitude. Pat and Ginger truly cared about me and my room reflects this.”   — Heidi...
